03377P- Senior Data Analyst

Job Summary: The Cyberinfrastructure for Network Science Center (CNS) full-time senior data analyst leads the Center’s database focused research and development projects. Currently, six databases are under development and/or in production and are used in diverse externally funded projects.

Provides technical expertise and supervision for the design, setup, production, maintenance, monitoring, and security of multi-TB PostgreSQL and SparQL databases. Researches the state of the art in areas related to data management, data integration, and provenance for scientific data repositories and participates in the development of new data management services and standards. In addition, serves as a consultant in assisting with data management needs of faculty, staff and students, performs training to ensure that project team leads optimally utilize the databases and associated services, works closely with clients, and publishes results in scientific venues. Serves as project manager for multiple data-related projects, funded both internally and externally, working directly with diverse clients to define project goals, establish estimates, negotiate contracts and to ensure that work is completed in an effective and timely fashion.


REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, library science, information science, or engineering and two years of database administration experience

Experience designing real-world database applications; and extensive experience with regular expressions, data parsing and cleaning tools, Java/PHP, Web services, SQL schema design, PostgreSQL stored procedures, and database normalization. Possess a broad-based, highly technical background including project management experience, systems administration and extensive user interaction necessary. Supervisory experience in a computer setting; and effective leadership skills and ability to work independently but cooperate closely with researchers as well as other system administrators, programmers, and support personnel.

Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills including ability to interact and communicate effectively with a wide variety of individuals and work collaboratively and strategically with researchers, administrators and technical staff at IU as well as on a national and international level. Strong organizational skills including ability to multitask and prioritize in a complex, rapidly changing environment; and demonstrated technical, analytical and problem solving skills.

Job Summary: The Cyberinfrastructure for Network Science (CNS) Center (http://cns.iu.edu) at the School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University, Bloomington is looking for a Software Developer to join our team.

Performs research and programming for current and future externally funded research projects. These projects include data mining and visualization tools and online services as well as interactive maps and web sites. Participates in the entire software development process, from the collection of user stories through planning, implementation, testing, deployment, and documentation. The resulting diverse industry-strength Cyberinfrastructures and tools are used by 100,000 of users around the globe, the online interactive visualizations communicate developments in science and technology to a large, general audience, and the Information Visualization course (http://ivmooc.cns.iu.edu) provides training for students from 100 countries.


REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information science, human-computer interaction, or related discipline, one year of experience in software development using Java or JavaScript, experience with at least one scripting language such as Python or Ruby, and experience with at least one source control system such as Git or Subversion.

Knowledge of Java, and JavaScript; and familiarity with either Python or Ruby. Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills including ability to interact and communicate effectively with a wide variety of individuals. Strong organizational and multitasking skills including ability to work on complex problems in an environment that can include many interruptions and competing demands.
